Shibayama Nioson Temple
Visiting the Haniwa Museum And try bell ringing
A Tendai-sect Buddhist temple whose head temple is Enryakuji Temple in Mt. Hiei.
Its history dates back to the middle of the Heian period when it was founded
in 781 A.D. The black Nio statues were known for their blessings of warding off
fire and theft. In an age where fires in Edo were common, it was said that
"there were no merchants in Edo who hadn’t enshrined the image of Nio in
their stores." In fact, the Nio statues were respected as highly as Buddha for
the miracles they performed. For this reason, the Shibayama Nioson enshrines
the Nio statues within its Niomon Gates, which is very rare.
